On the occasion of the 15th World Rabies Day, which takes place every year on 28 September, Dr Guillaume Convert, Technical Director for Rabies at the VPH Center (Veterinary Public Health) at Boehringer Ingelheim, explains to us how the implementation of a concrete One Health strategy in the field could make it possible to eliminate rabies and restore the link between humans and dogs.
For the second issue of our « Regard d’expert » series, we met Christophe Dufour, Scientific Director of Mérieux NutriSciences in France, on the occasion of the International Food Safety Day held on June 7. In this interview, he gives us an overview of Food Safety and talks about its links with animal health, as well as the challenges posed by new emerging risks.
In a year dominated by an unprecedented global health crisis, the VPH HUB is emphasizing veterinary public health’s decisive role in the fight against infectious diseases and creates an Idex-accredited Industrial Education and Research Chair promoting the One Health approach.
During the visit of a delegation from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in Lyon, their Director General Dr. Monique Eloit met with the founding partners of the VPH Hub to discuss Veterinary Public Health issues and the implementation of the “One Health” concept.
We presented our first concrete actions to her:
- Creation of an industrial chair in Veterinary Public Health
- Project to organise an international conference
- Reflection around an apprenticeship and training programme in alternance
With the objective to make Lyon and its region a world-class reference centre in Veterinary Public Health
#PartneringAgainstCovid19 brought together 3200 people representing 2100 companies and organisations from 82 countries over 3 days to work together to imagine solutions to fight Covid-19.
The VPH HUB is pleased to have taken part in this event in order to remind the value of the One Health approach in the prevention and control of epidemics and to highlight the assets of Lyon and its region in terms of Veterinary Public Health and, more broadly, immuno-infectiology.
Thanks to the #PartneringAgainstCovid19 platform we have already organized more than 20 meetings with companies and organizations from around the world, whether in animal health research, biotechnology, diagnostics, vaccines or bioinformatics.
These are all opportunities to facilitate collaborations with the regional health ecosystem in the context of the fight against Covid-19 but also in the longer term as part of our initiative in Veterinary Public Health.
Lyon, the cradle of infectiology, vaccinology and Veterinary Public Health, benefits from world-class research in immuno-infectiology, as well as dedicated infrastructures in Veterinary Public Health.
We hope that this global event, set up in just a few weeks from Lyon thanks to the Lyonbiopôle cluster, the Lyon-based company Inova, and Evaluate Pharma, will allow to accelerate the research and development of therapeutic, diagnostic or preventive solutions against Covid-19.
With our collaborative model between a dozen public and private partners*, we are convinced that cooperation and a transdisciplinary approach are a response to the crisis we are experiencing.

As the unprecedented crisis we are experiencing is highlighting the link between human health, animal health and the role of animals in the transmission of certain diseases, as well as the relationship to the environment, the One Health approach that we support within the VPH HUB appears to be one of the keys to a coordinated response in the fight against epidemics.
